The group will meet at 7:00pm at Riverside Wine Bar on Rt. 43 (Mantua St.) in Kent to discuss Irene Nemirovsky’s Suite Francaise. Nemirovsky’s best-selling work of historical fiction depicts the German occupation of France during World War II from the perspective of this Russian, Jewish immigrant. January 31, 2009: Scribbles Writing Group. All TCs are welcome. The group will meet at Scribbles in Kent at 12:30pm for an afternoon of coffee and writing. May 16, 2009: Ohio Professional Writers Spring Conference. WKSU-FM (89.7) hosts the annual writers’ conference for the OPW beginning at 11:00am at the WKSU-FM broadcast center on Kent State University, Kent campus. Find out more about mentorship opportunities for high school and college journalists! Pulitzer-prize winning Plain Dealer columnist Connie Schultz will serve as keynote speaker. An affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women, the Ohio Professional Writers, Inc. offers professional development for journalists, reporters, authors, and media specialists. Congratulations to TCs Darla Wagner and Jeff Harr, whose articles were published in Voice of Youth Advocates’s collection entitled “Hooked on YA Lit! A Book Group for Teachers and Librarians.” A round of applause goes out to TC Jennifer Walker, who was named 2009 Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Department of Education. Walker, a 13-year teaching veteran, has taught English and reading in the junior high and high school grades. She has taught English in Youngstown City Schools for 10 years. Advanced Institutes: After the successful launch of our Advanced Institute this summer, NWP-KSU is looking for TCs interested in either facilitating or attending Advanced Institutes and workshops exclusively for our site. Advanced Institute facilitators are paid and attendees can earn graduate credit. Suggested topics include: -Assessing and Responding to Student Writing -Implementing Technology into Writing Pedagogy -Teacher Research on Writing -Using Graphica in Reading and Writing Classrooms -Visual Rhetoric Other suggestions are welcome!
