Balanced Literacy: Investigating 'Alternative Literacies' in the
Writing and Reading Classroom

Daily topics include:
  • How multiple modalities help students understand rhetorical situations:
    moving the "essay" beyond the written word;
  • Theory, research, and practice in teaching graphic novels;
  • Technologizing the writing process; techniques for teaching writing with
    computers;
  • Using "Alternative Literacies" to work with diverse student populations.

Teachers are expected to develop their own "Alternative Literacies" project
during this workshop - details on these projects may be found in the course
syllabus.
